Goals vs Bills – What’s On Your Desk?
I got two very inspiring ideas from the stealth master of internet copywriting, Rob Canyon, yesterday.
One is about goal setting, and how what you keep around in
the open in your daily work environment (such as your desk…)
might have profound effects on your mind and success.
It may sound to you a little bit like “The Secret”, but hear me out!
Ask yourself if the little items that you have lying around (or even
orderly stacked up) on your desk take over a portion of your
attention.
I’m not sure about you – just think about it for a moment…
I know, having stacks of bills that need to be paid on my desk
has a profound effect on the pressure that I put on myself.
To come up with ideas to make more money.
To apply urgency to ideas and implementations.
To quench my creativity because there is no time for that.
And what kind of “goal” is that anyway – paying your bills?
Now let’s turn this around for a minute.
Let’s just say you’ve taken some time to set actual goals that are worthwhile of your energy, of your creativity, and that inspire you.
Inspire you enough to take action and actually work towards them.
Inspire you to put faith and trust into the path in front of you. The path that will take you there.
Now, let’s say you had come up with a way to keep those goals out on your desk, where they can continue to penetrate your mind.
Continue to inspire you.
Sticky notes is just one idea how to do it.
And you don’t have to set goals for ALL areas of your life.
Here is the execise:
- Hide your bills from plain sight (but do pay them – as much as you can at least!)
- Keep your goals out where your bills used to be
- Observe carefully the changes in your mind and document them
Let me know how it goes in the comment section!

Interesting concept but I can’t say that what’s on my desk influences me in anyway.
In fact, I don’t even notice it.

Hi Tom,
Unfortunately my desk looks like a bombs hit it. I’m always writing notes and keeping bits of paper, just in case I need them.
However, I too listened to Rob Canyon’s Double Click Webinar and have set myself an achievable money target that I hope to achieve by the end of the month following his programme.

I once hired a organization consultant for a couple of sessions, and she used to say: “Just pick up any stack of unorganized paper from your desk, and you will find it to be a perfect reflection of the general order or disorder that you have everywhere.” (I’m paraphrasing here…)
Order vs. “bomb shell” is one thing though, but replacing specific items that pull you into distraction with specific items that pull you into focus is a stunningly simple trick – to me at least.
Cheers,
Thomas
Hi Thomas,
What a wonderful, informative post! I really am enjoying Rob’s class and you have nailed what he said. You know, something so simple REALLY does work, doesn’t it? My goals are now prominent and they are what I see, not the pile of bills.(I stashed them in a drawer, with a reminder set up in my computer so that I don’t forget to pay them) Out of sight…out of mind!
I have my income goal taped to the top right corner of my laptop, so I see it ALL day long…and that has given me the focus that I had been lacking for such a long time!
Keep up the great work, Thomas-I wish you the very best!
