caterpillars226This is a bonus episode of Blog Traffic Getting with Thomas. Let’s do a case study of the top 10 elements for getting tons of traffic to your blog. Learning from the big boys must bring you success by imitation.

Check out this blog entry on the BBC News Magazine Monitor site, and let’s go over the points that are worth imitating:

  1. Using a List (“10 Things We Did Not Know Last Week”)
  2. Interesting Content (Most items are not exactly news worthy, but definitely worth knowing and talking about)
  3. Tapping into several subjects that are currently hot news themes (like Les Paul’s death)
  4. Mention several celebrity names (Tom Cruise, Kim Jong-il, UK lottery)
  5. Create relevance by association (the vehicle of associating is the list…)
  6. Using the blog site as an RSS feed aggregator (“News Feeds” widget on the right margin)
  7. Entertainment value (give people something to impress their friends with at the water cooler, or by sharing on Facebook and social media)
  8. Presentation (the theme of this series is illustrated by a reader-submitted picture of 10 random items – in this case 10 caterpillars, submitted by Peter Bissell – thank you, Peter!)
  9. Social proof (although a bit thin in case of the BBC, the elements for social proof are reader participation – send in a picture of 10 items for next week, invitation to submit “letter”, and a small Twitter tool box) – of course, you would invite blog comments…
  10. “More details” link under each of the 10 news items, engaging the visitor to spend more time on the site

Food for thought and immitation. – Are you alive? Proove it! Re-Tweet, leave a comment and tell me what you think…
